We start early morning from Shimla and head towards Kafnu our trek starting point. The Drive takes us through one of the most scenic routes in Himachal offering us a Panoramic View of over 250 Kms of Dhauladhar, Pir Panjal & Himalayan Ranges all the way from Dharamshala till Yumnotri Massif in Uttrakhand. From Narkanda we descend towards the Satluj Valley. On the way we halt for Lunch and Be on our way. From Wangtoo the road diverts and we start a long winding climb towards Kafnu. Perched at 2400 Meters AMSL is our halt for the night. We Relax for the rest of the evening. Meet your trek team here and settle down for an adventure of a lifetime. Overnight at Kafnu.

After an early breakfast we load up and head out on the trail. Initially we walk along a dirt road till we reach a point from where we climb up into the forest. The Ascent is Gradual along the road and winds up steeply at points. After a while the valley opens up and one gets a grand view of Majestic Dense forest and meadows in the distance. A Mix of Cimbs and Gradual Ascents takes us out of the tree line and a vast meadow welcomes us. A Little further from here are forest Sheds along with a camping ground. Mulling is one of the prettiest camping sites along a river with a dense forest on the other side with Glaciers hanging high above. Soak in the beauty of nature. Post Dinner Overnight at Mulling

After breakfast we hit the trail and head towards our next camp at Kara. Today is comparatively an easier day. The Trail is more or less level with some gradually winding trails. Before we reach the river crossing (Which Mostly is Dry River Bed) From here the trails climbs steeply to the higher meadows and it’s the end of the tree line as well. After climbing up for over a kilometre the trail becomes more or less level and we traverse a steep meadow (Hill Side) All the way till Kara. A Sheep Breeding Farm Kara is a unique camp site with Two Valleys meeting here it offers some amazing views along with a Small Alpine Lake. After Dinner Overnight at Kara Campsite

One the most exciting days of the trek is today. We start from Kara and cross a river. Post which a steep climb takes us to higher meadows, offering panoramic views of Kara below and Tia valley in the distance. From here the climb is constant in a mix of gradual ascents and steep winding trails. We reach the lower camp first and then one last climb to reach the camp at Phustirang with a winding river on one side the pass on our right and the river delta stretching towards the end of the valley. Phustirang is our halt for 2 Nights for acclimatization. We relax in the lap of the nature soaking in the beauty of this wonderland. There are shepherds in the valley and the entire valley is alive with their livestock. Post Dinner Overnight at Phustirang

We start our day at Leisure and leave to explore the valley around mid-morning. A Leisurely walk towards the end of the valley along the river is a delightful hike. The Towering Peaks on Each Side gives you the feel of being right in the middle of the Himalayan Ranges. We go till the end from where we can see another pass crossing also known as Chhota Bhaba (Or Smaller Bahaba Pass). After spending sometime here we head back to the Camp. Rest of the day it at leisure. After an early dinner we retire to tents early as we have a real early morning start next day.

By far the longest and hardest day of the trek begins with an early morning breakfast and we start at around 04:00 Am in the morning. Slowly we make our way up the steep mountain side zig zagging towards the first Ridge. By Day break we reach the top and witness the beautiful bird’s eye view of the Lush Green Valleys of Kinnaur for one last time. From here the trail is through Moraine and Boulders with occasional Snow Patches on the way. Towards the End one last steep ascent takes us to the zero point of the Pass. The View from the top is remarkably unique on one side lush green meadows of Kinnaur and on the other side stark brown arid, cold dessert of Pin Valley of Spiti. We negotiate the descend over a glacier to reach the trail on the other side. The Descent is initially steep but after a river crossing a gradual descent through moraine and debris along the river takes us all the way to the end of the valley from where we turn along the Pin River which is flowing deep down in the valley. The trail is narrow and steep so one needs to be cautious here. We reach the camp by late afternoon early evening and just crash in the tents to ease the tired body and cramped up muscles. After breakfast we head out towards civilization. The Walk from here is more or less a level walk with some sections of Descends & Ascents. After about an hour the village can be seen in the distance. Multi Coloured mountains surround us with Pin River Roaring down in the valley. We reach Mud around early afternoon where our transport is waiting for us to take us to Kaza where a stay has been booked for us. Reach Kaza and its time to Shower and clean up before heading to the market to explore local handicraft and cuisines. Overnight at Kaza

After breakfast we head out on our leisure day. We board the transport and head towards Losar the First village of Spiti Valley from here we climb towards almost 15000 Feet High Kunzum Pass. After short stop here we drive down towards Batal and just a kilometre before Batal we take the diversion heading towards Chandertal Lake. Reach the Camps by mid day and later visit the majestic Chandertal Lake. One of the most beautiful locations in Himachal Pradesh Chandertal Lake is also the origin of Chandra River which becomes Chandrabhaga at Tandi and is known as Chenab in Kashmir. The last day of this epic adventure involves an equally thrilling drive through one of the most rugged and remotest roads in India. We halt at Famous Chacha Chachi Dhaba at Batal before we drive past the largest Glacier in Himachal Pradesh The Bara Shigri Glacier with Famous White Sail & Papsuar Peaks in the background. The River crossings along the road are equally thrilling. The Off Road Experience ends at Gramphoo from where we take the Manali Leh Road to reach Atal Tunnel. After crossing Atal Tunnel we are welcomed by Lush Green Forest and Might Hanuman Tibba on the South Portal. We reach Manali by Late Afternoon. The Trip ends with Drop at Manali.

Preparations:
Fitness requirements for Bhaba Pin Pass Trek:
High Level of fitness is a must for this High-Altitude Trek. (First timers will find this trek very Challenging therefore prior Trekking Experience too is a must for this trail) the effects of High Altitude can be experienced from 7000 Feet above sea level. As we gain altitude the atmosphere thins and availability of Oxygen in the air drops. However, a gradual ascent along with proper precautions makes it easier for human body to acclimatize to High Altitude.
Bhaba Pin Pass is at an approximate height of 16,500 Feet AMSL (4810 Mtrs) it is considered to be a Difficult Trek
Experience: Prior Trekking Experience is a Must at least 1 or 2 above 12000 to 14000 Feet Plus.
Fitness required for Bhaba Pin Pass Trek: The trail is more or less laid out path, with very steep ascents and descent, with availability of water is limited along the trail. But not to face last minute upsets we advise to keep certain things in mind. We plan our itineraries in a way that our trekkers will have to walk 10 to 12 Kms and approximately 6 to 10 Hours a day Subjected to Terrain. Which means approximately 1.5 to 2.5 Kms in an hour. However, given the terrain and the altitude it’s considered to be equivalent of 3 Km in 1 hours in Plains.
If you can run or cover 3 Km in 1 Hour you are fairly fit for the trek, however we have a 3-week schedule that can be followed to prepare your body for the trek:
Training Schedule:
Stretch your arms and legs following some basic stretching exercises before your training everyday.
A Month Before The Trek: The curriculum should follow a 10 Minute Brisk walk, 10 Minutes Jog and 10 Minutes Brisk walk to end the session. Follow this for a week
3 Weeks Before the Trek: We go one notch up and start 5 Minutes Brisk walk, 15 to 20 Minutes of Jog and Minutes of easy walk to end the session. Follow this for one week.
2 Weeks Before the Trek: Repeat the schedule followed in the previous week
1 Week Before the Trek: Brisk Walk for 5 Minutes and 25 Minutes of Jog, after the Jog cool down your body. Follow this regime till the beginning of the trek.

Bhaba Pin Pass Trek is a High-Altitude Trail in the Unforgiving Barren Cold Dessert of Pin Valley of Spiti Region, connecting Kafnu in Kinnaur with Mud Village in Spiti. The trails is relatively remote which raise the difficulty Level of this trek significantly. There are multiple river crossings making it a unique Himalayan Adventure with some majestic views along the way. The Trail is one of the few cross over treks in India which takes you from Lush Green Himalayan Valleys to the Arid Dry Cold Dessert.
Months of June pre monsoon & September, October Post Monsoon are the best time to do Bhaba Pin Pass Trek. If a clear weather window allows Monsoons are one the best times as the flowering along the trail is magnificent.
Good physical fitness is must for all treks and so it is for this trek, doing regular walks and jogging for 25 Minutes every day is recommended, please check the fitness section for more information on the same, Bhaba Pin Pass is considered to be a High Altitude Himalayan Trek considered to be of Difficult Category. Pass Crossing Day is one the longest and may take over 12 Hours.
The day time temperatures are pleasant and can be upto 20 Degrees however in mornings and evenings single digit temperatures can be expected and it might drop below zero in the nights specially in post monsoon months.
Bhaba Pin Pass Trail varies from 6 to 12 Kms in a day and walk for about 6 to 10 Hours is the average time taken by a trekker to cover this distance, enabling us to reach the camp site by Evening.

Diamox is a medicine which is helps in acclimatization, but it also has certain side effects not recommended to people allergic to Sulpha Class of medicines, we advise otherwise and instruct all trekkers to consult a physician before taking any such medicine.
All our treks are accompanied by certified and experienced Trek leaders, following the principal of sustainable tourism we source our local teams from neighbouring villages who also are familiar with the region, along with the trek leader our support staff consists of Cooks, Helpers, Mules and Local Guides, the size of the team depends on the group size.
Considering the risks involved in High Altitude treks We Prefer a group size of 15 to 20 Trekkers, This Ensure Safety as well as service quality is in place. Rarely we cross this number as small group size ensures memorable experience and is also the best way to enjoy the trek and have better team bonding among the trekkers.
If you have booked on a date of one of our fixed departure. We ensure that the trek goes on even if there is only one person who has booked a trek. Our fixed departures are our promise to our customers and taking a loss in fulfilling the same is something we are willing to bare to ensure customer satisfaction.
Mountains are safer in these terms compared to Plains, people are always helpful and respectful. However we try and maintain a ratio of 2:1 on all treks and its ensured solo female trekkers either share tents with other solo female trekkers or are provided a separate tent.

We recommend to carry what is needed while on the trek and leave excess stuff behind, in case you want to offload your bags we provide that option to all trekkers, the charges for the same start from Rs 250/- Per Bag Per Day with a weight limit of 9 Kgs or Less. For Certain treks we include the cost subjected to the difficulty level & Logistical challenges of a trek.
Good trekking shoes are recommended for all treks, though you have plenty options in the market we usually recommend a high ankle shoes as they always are better compared to sports shoes. High Ankle shoes support your ankles when traversing through moraine and boulder zones which are common on most of the high altitude trails.
Tents provided are 3+1 which comfortably accommodates 2-3 trekkers.
Though 1st Time Trekkers may join but we recommend prior trekking experience of multiple 14000 Feet Plus Treks. However Bhaba Pin Pass Trek will need Good fitness level both physically and mentally. The Highest Altitude here is 16,100 Feet AMSL. However, to achieve the recommended level of fitness please refer to our article “How to Prepare for a High Altitude Trek”. Vegetarian meals are provided all three times during the trek along with Eggs in Breakfast in starting days, Vegetarian food is recommended as it is easy to digest vegetarian food in high altitudes, we provide Breakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks and Dinner.
The water found in Himalayan streams is generally safe to drink, and you have plenty of them when you are trekking Himalayas, your trek leaders/local guides know where to fill your water bottles, in case you are still unsure about drinking the water we recommend you carry your own purifying pills.
Our operations/treks take us to remote regions with more or less zero connectivity and extreme conditions, right next to harshest elements that nature can throw at us. There are possibilities of unforeseen circumstances which may forces us to change the itinerary. In such cases your trek leader will inform you about the change in plan and best available options similar to existing itinerary. In these events Backpacking Diaries reserves right to change the itinerary which can be due to various different factors. Any additional cost which is incurred due to these changes will be borne by the trekkers and the same will be communicated to the trekkers before-hand.
Depending on the group size the transport vehicles are determined and can be anything from a Sumo, Xylo or similar vehicles and in certain case tempo travellers.
We have certified and experienced trek leaders who have loads of experience in dealing with illness at high altitude. Our teams are experienced in handling such situations. However we carry a basic medical kit along with oxygen cylinders with us for situations of emergency and our first objective is to rescue the trekker to the road head and the cost for the same is to be incurred by the trekker. In addition to this it’s a trekkers responsibility to get our medical fitness certificate filled and duly attested by a certified physician indicating that you are medically fit for the trek.
Yes, you have an option of always customizing the trek, the cost for the same is decided as per the number of pax in your personal group, trek style and region where the trek will be conducted. However cost of the customized trek varies from the number of people and specific services that one may opt for.
In such events we provide you an alternate trek option of similar value depending upon weather conditions if the trek is cancelled due to ‘force majeure’. As all our arrangements are prepaid and pre planed. In case of non-completion of trek for any reason whatsoever, there will be no refund for any unutilized services.

The trek starts from famous tourist town of Shimla below are the details: Shimla: The starting point for Bhaba Pin Pass Trek is Shimla, You will be picked up from your Hotel early in the Morning and we leave for Kafnu (the base camp or starting point of the trek) no Later than 8:00 Am in the morning How to reach Shimla (Bus) Shimla being a famous tourist town has regular Volvo/Deluxe Bus service plying from Delhi, these buses leave from Cashemere Gate ISBT in New Delhi and are operated by both Govt. and Private Operators, the journey is around 08 to 10 Hours. How to reach Shimla (Air) Jubbarhatti is the nearest airport to Shimla, which is connected by air from Delhi. Chandigarh Airport is around 4 Hours from Shimla and has better Air & Train Connectivity. We can arrange for cabs for transfer from Chandigarh to Shimla also from Jubbar Hatti to Shimla, there are bus services available as well.
